3:06 am - Games of 08 Part 1: Technical/Dubious Awards
|
Well here we are. I decided to wait as long as I could so I could play as many games as possible, but before I just don't care about making a list anymore I figure I should do it. It's fascinating how many games even in my Top 10 are not going to show up until that list. This last year was full of so many quality games that many will get neglected.
Part 1 will be Technical and Dubious awards followed by Part 2 and 3 which will contain Platform specific awards, and My Top 10 of the year.
So right now I will point out the games I did not play in 08. I probably will get to them at some point, but it's too late now for this list. Luckily I'm starting a category called "Late To The Party" that will be for a game I missed a previous year, but just got to. Anyhow here are the games I did not play this year
Far Cry 2 MotorStorm: Pacific Rift Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 Yakuza 2 Saints Row 2 Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia God of War: Chains of Olympus Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Professor Layton
Best Surprise WINNER: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (PSP)
Every Final Fantasy VII spin-off released prior to Crisis Core was complete trash. So when Crisis Core finally came out and was actually good I couldn't believe it. In fact I would even say it's among the best Final Fantasies of the past 10 years. Kind of sad when you think about it. RUNNER UP: Boom Blox (Wii) Dead Space (Multi)
Most Disappointing WINNER: Alone in the Dark (Multi)
This was actually a really easy choice. Mainly because all the other options were still good games. They might not have lived up to the hype, but they were of extremely high quality. The only game that I was excited for up until release that really let me down was Alone in the Dark. The tech demo's released by Atari were amazing. The game had all these great ideas, but the final product was a buggy mess of a game. The silver lining is that the ideas seen in Alone in the Dark will probably go on to be standard in many future games. RUNNER UP: Haze (Playstation 3) Mirror's Edge (Multi)( The Rest )( Read more... )

12:08 pm - TBD #1 My Podcast is up!!!
|
Took a while, but finally got enough set up (still missing some music though) to start the show. We decided to start without everything so we could get our feet wet and basically feel comfortable. So the Show is called the TBD Show. The title stands for a couple things one of which is our crew. I've put together 3 regulars (Tejeev, Brice, David) and a different guest every week. All the people on the show will probably be from DigiPen Institute of Technology and will be classmates of mine. We are going to discuss games, movies, television, and probably go off into other topics. We will also have special segments each week. "Vs." is our review segment, and "Top 5" where we each share a different list each week. There is very little structure in the rest of the show. Though I would say there is maybe too much in the first episode, as I tend to be reading the next topic instead of giving my own opinion. We may switch hosts every week as its a pretty nerve wracking job. But anyways check out the podcast. The website for the show is... www.tobedeterminedshow.com You can also find it on itunes. In our first episode we talk about "Banjo-Kazooie 3" and the latest from TV legend Joss Whedon in an American sized discussion. In Vs. we review the vomit inducing "Speed Racer", and David & Tejeev reveal their terrible childhoods in our Top 5. If you care about spoilers remember to check the times down below. 0:01:14-0:38:05 - Game News 0:38:06-1:01:20 - Gaming? 1:01:21-1:09:53 - Movie News 1:09:54-1:13:32 - Watching? 1:13:34-1:24:05 - Vs: "Speed Racer" 1:24:07-1:34:27 - TV News 1:34:28-1:48:02 - Slothing? **Small Lost Season 1 spoilers** 1:48:04-2:06:24 - Top 5: TV Shows You Loved as a Kid 2:06:25-2:07:01 - Outro Podcast TBD #1

1:45 pm - Making a podcast & Maybe got a job
|
Well my rommates and I are doing a podcast. Will probably be around a 2 hour show where we will sit around and talk about games, movies, tv shows and anything that interests us. The backbone is all setup were just getting some mics and a mixer. I think its gonna be good fun to get all my roommates together to fight about stuff.
Also I may have a job testing over the summer at a major videogame company here. Fingers crossed.
The site for the podcast is in the works, but here is the link. I'd expect the first episode to be up around May 3rd.

6:29 am - The Surprise Hit of the Year? I hope i'm not Alone in the Dark...
|
|
For a while now Eden Studios re-imagining of the survival horror game Alone in the Dark (Xbox360, PS3, PC) has been in the back of my mind. Ever since they showed the first trailer with its amazing music and intense action. It looked like a AAA title, but of course this was a trailer. I wasn't going to get too hyped up over a bunch of cinemas. Well over the past year small bits and pieces have come into light, and I think this could very well be the surprise of the year. Here are 5 reasons why. 5. The Atmosphere - They are attempting a Silent Hill sort of aesthetic. Make the fear of being attacked more scary than the actual attack by using amazing music, sound effects, camera angles and lighting. This has proven time and time again as the best way to scare someone.
4. Chapter Skipping - Skip segments of the game like a DVD. A controversial option at first glance, but when you think about the amount of people who don't actually finish games (i'm guilty of it) this can be very helpful. It will be interesting to see if this succeeds and more games take notice, because its a common issue that many game developers **** about. Personally I probably wouldn't do it since the game is in a television format and I don't want to miss anything (it's possible that it won't skip story segments). Plus if you skip stuff you miss out on achievements which you would only want if your hardcore anyways. 3. Television Format - The game is basically split into "episodes". Like a Television show each episode can stand on its own, but is part of some bigger picture (Lost, X-Files). In fact each episode contains plot twists, revelations, action and cliffhangers. You complete one episode and you feel like you can sit the controller down and come back later. Or you just can't wait to find out what happens next, so you play the next episode. Instead of the Sam & Max way of episodic content where you feel the pain of watching a TV show because you have to wait a month to see the next episode in AitD it's like a TV series on DVD. You can continue when you want to. And so far this format has helped many TV shows find new audiences.
2. Ease of Use - The game can be played in both first and third person view. There is a quick draw option to pull out the last item you used without going to your inventory and in fact your inventory is located in your jacket in real time. As some people may remember how the tension in something like RE4 wears off when you can pause and go through your inventory. Options are the future and seeing Japanese games like MGS4 adopting this policy just reassures this.
1. Real World Rules - Every objects reacts how it would in the real world. From light and shadow to physical items. Puncture a blood packet and create a trail behind you. Combine a bottle of alcohol, cloth and make a Molotov Cocktail. Or take a flare and put some adhesive on it so it sticks to the ceiling. It's like an Oblivion Survival Horror game. This is the kind of revolutionary gameplay that you tend to see in PC games. Games that combine tech and gameplay to advance the medium. Games like Half-Life 2 and Spore. When you put all of these aspects together you start to get a picture in your head of what kind of game this can be. The team at Eden Studios made Test Drive respectable again a couple years ago with Test Drive Unlimited, so I think we could have a hit on our hands. Of course if they push this sucker out before its ready we could have a stinker. Which sadly happens far too often with games that have this much potential.

Surprisingly good for a teaser trailer. Great music and build up to actual footage that I wasn't expecting. Just keep the one liners to a minimum in the actual movie and we could have ourselves a great sequel.

2:20 am - My Top 10 Most Anticipated Games of 08
|
|
My god are there a lot of games coming in 08. This list was very very tough. Now lets just assume that RE5 and FFXIII are not going to make it to North America this year.
Just Missed Echochrome, Too Human, Alan Wake, Socom Confrontation, Left 4 Dead, Far Cry 2, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed...must...list...more...
10. Resistance 2 (Playstation 3)
Insomniac never makes a bad game. But this time they better innovate if they want me to love this sequel.

11:18 pm - Xbox Live FINALLY in PSN's sights?
|

I've been waiting for the day to come when Sony would implement in-game XMB (Like the 360 has with its dashboard). The main reason is for the friends list and chatting. As of now you have to quit a game to go view messages. And you can't invite people across games. Well it looks like Sony accidentally released a little something signifying that in-game friend list, text-voice-and video messaging was coming! They quickly took it down, but it appears that the cat is out of the bag. One could assume that in-game XMB (which they have said is coming) would mean in-game friends list, but its nice to have confirmation that this particular feature is indeed true. Whats next? How about custom soundtracks. Oh and let me use the PS3 Web Browser while playing a game. Boy that would be helpful for getting help.

8:43 am - The Hidden Costs of Next Gen
|
Made this little list to really see what the differences were in price and features for each console. Some may say that including Hi-def player isn't needed, but oh well. Add em up youself if you want. The point is that there are a lot of hidden costs with these consoles. Anything with a * is an average price of sites across the net. I also averaged the amount of games a normal person would get in their life and how many years they would have a net service. Each console also gets 4 controllers. Remember this is for the seasoned

7:08 am - Mass Effect DLC???
|
|

Recently EA announced that Bioware's popular Xbox360 RPG Mass Effect was getting its first DLC pack. An hour and a half of content for $5. I had some problems with Mass Effect's sidequests and the gameplay involved. They were basically terrible fetch quests that had really no impact on anything. As a result the game felt very short. The main quest itself would take maybe 8 hours to complete which was very disappointing considering the only reason you would continue to play Mass Effect was for the main story. What is this new content going to do to that story? Is it really going to advance it in any meaningful way? Can we take our leveled up characters and use them after we have beaten the game with this content? Is it really over an hour in length (doubtful)? When is Mass Effect 2 coming? We are supposed to get a trilogy on the 360. Personally I would love it if they took their time with it and make a game that had meaningful sidequests. Don't spread a bunch of crap over 20 empty planets. Make 5-6 central planets that have lots of stuff to do on each, and have them feed into the main quest. Make it like KOTOR basically. Want to have a bunch of planets to explore? Well then make the objects and items found on them worth something besides worthless money. Oh and fix all the tech glitches for christ sake.

7:06 am - 07 Film Recap
|
Over the past month i've been trying to play all the games that I've felt I needed to (most of those are done) and also trying to view all the films that i've either wanted to see or felt that I needed to see. I enjoy viewing movies that get nominated or are on top 10 lists of critics. I usually end up enjoying the films and it helps create a dialog inside myself that most movies that the average person sees wouldn't. Even the bad ones that I watch do. Sadly I wish I had someone in real life who enjoyed film (or even games) as much as I do. My roommates really are only willing to watch the crap movies and we don't have much to talk about afterwards. But anyways here is a quick letter grade recap of what I thought of the films i've seen the past month. When i'm done viewing them all i'll do a Who Will vs Who Should Win the Oscar type blog post and a Top 10 Films of 2007. Ghost Rider D- Resident Evil Extiction D- Rush Hour 3 D+ Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End D+ Spider-Man 3 C-

5:57 pm - My Games of the Year II: Game Harder
|
Didn't play enough PC Games, Fighters, Racers, Strategy, or Sports games this year to have those categories. I guess I could assume that Forza 2 would've won. Oh well. GENRE AWARDS
Best Adventure WINNER: Sam & Max: Season One (PC)
Sam & Max came back... and they came back good. There are plenty of adventure games on the DS, but to see the traditional PC point and click come back is nice. RUNNER UPS: Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (DS) Phoenix Wright: Trials & Tribulations (DS)
Best Action/Adventure WINNER: Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (Playstation 3)
While I think that GoWII has more balanced and fun gameplay it didn't have as interesting or charming of a story. And for me in the Action/Adventure genre I want that. RUNNER UPS: God of War II (Playstation 2) Assassin's Creed (Xbox360, Playstation 3)

3:51 pm - My Games of the Year: Part I
|
|
In honor of the Year End ritual and my love of lists I have decided to do my own little Best Of Blog. I'll choose categories that based on the games I have played this year I best have an opinion on. Today I will do a bunch of misc categories followed by genre and platform, then my Top 20 of the year. I have chosen to include some negative categories that have had some impact in this year of games (trends that bother me). MISC CATEGORIES
Best Surprise WINNER: The Simpons Game (Xbox 360, Playstation 3)
This game was genuinely funny. It made fun of so many games and most of the time it worked. The gameplay wasn't the best around, but it was good enough to enable me to play through the entire thing. I havn't been a Simpsons fan in years, but this game just works on so many nerd/gamer levels that I couldn't help but enjoy it. It makes me want a South Park themed game made in a similar way. Who would've thought a Simpsons game made by EA would be good? RUNNER UPS: Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Agmar (PC) Odin Sphere (Playstation 2)
Most Disapointing Game WINNER: Mass Effect (Xbox360)
Hype. Promises, That is what damaged Mass Effect. And saved Lair, Heavenly Sword or Assassins Creed from winning this. Lair for the longest time didn't look too good. It had a great premise, but more and more looked like it would have problems. And it did. It totally sucked. While Heavenly Sword and Assassins Creed never really had ultra-high expectations from me. Them being mentioned here does say that I was slightly disapointed, but not on the scale of Mass Effect. What happend with Mass Effect? Well promise of a whole galaxy to explore? No not really. You can go to maybe 20 planets 95% of which have nothing interesting to do on them. Moral choices that matter? Maybe for the sequel, but in the first game there is really only one, and you end up not caring too much about it because the story that has come before it is so short. A great hybrid of action and RPG? While the combat gets better as you go along it never feels right, and is held back by very bad tech. From horrible texture pop-in that happens right before your eyes throughout every scene, to some bad framerate hiccups. What saves Mass Effect from being a failure is the voice acting, interesting story, characters, and amazing world that Bioware has created. So much so that I actually would give it 8. RUNNER UPS: Lair (Playstation 3) Heavenly Sword (Playstation 3)

7:21 pm - A Look Back... Playstation 2 Edition
|
Damn was this list tough. So many great games and so many amazing sequels. I included multiplatform games, but only if I played them on the PS2 and they were the best version. 10. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
Best Tony Hawk by far. Probably the last Tony Hawk game really worth playing. The first online PS2 game. Good stuff. 9. God of War 2
Even better than the original. More boss fights more of everything. QTE gameplay rules. At least in God of War it does. 8. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
Really San Andreas is the best GTA when it comes to features and even story, but by the time I played it GTA really was at a point where it needs a new console. There was only so much you could do with the series on the PS2 before you really start to get burned out on it. 7. Twisted Metal Black
Great story and awesome cutscenes. Brutal and smart art design. Best Twisted Metal gameplay since 2. 6. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
A game that has grown on me big time. When I first played it I was pretty disapointed with the story focusing on Raiden. But after many play throughs I really got into the story and the amazing art direction and really how memorable the whole thing is. It's like Kojima said F U to what people expected. He really is genious. 5. Grand Theft Auto 3
The beginning of what gaming has become. The first real popular open ended game. Can't deny the memories of playing it. 4. Shadow of the Colossus
Amazing art direction, brilliant score, and downright beautiful story. 3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
GTAIII is where it really starts, but Vice City perfected it. The ****and amazing soundtrack really brought you into the 80's. It added planes and helicopters and bikes and just plain ruled. 2. SOCOM: US Navy SEALS
It's hard to get people to love a game like this unless they actually find a group/clan to play with. Everyone has different experiances with these games. Mine was amazing and probably the best i've ever had with an online game. I spent almost 2 years playing this game regularly. I moved onto SOCOM II which lasted for a good time, but still didn't have the amazingly perfect ****of the first. Heres hoping SOCOM for PS3 is awesome. 1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Great drama and like the previous MGS games it has a better story than pretty much every other game ever made. MGS is the series that has made me hate any other story based game that comes out. Nothing compares. Great twists, awesome action, fun innovative gameplay, and the typical Kojima crazyness.

5:17 pm - A Look Back... Gamecube Edition
|
|
Well it's the end of an era. The Gamecube and Xbox are dead and the PS2 is done with the good games. It's time for the next generation, so I thought it would be fun to look back at the best of the past 6 years with some top 10 lists (damn do I love them). 10. Killer 7
A very wierd, violent, and dirty game. Just the way I like em. Killer 7 is a game that many people would not like. The gameplay is unorthodox, and it takes some playing to really get to the meat of the game, but stick with it and it will surprise you. 9. Warioware Inc. Mega Partygames
Warioware Inc wasn't reviewed very well. It was basically the GBA game with some added multiplayer modes. Basically the single player sucked. But when you had 4 people around and played the amazing multiplayer games you saw the gem that this game was. With 4 controllers by the way. It's a great contrast to what Smooth Moves did wrong on the Wii.

11:23 pm - Top 20 Most Anticipated Games of 07
|
|
Many of the games on this list may not even show up this year. Some (Lost Odyssey, FFXIII) games that would be very high on my list aren't here, because I doubt very highly that they will come out in North American this year. 20. Halo 3 (Xbox360) Never been a fan of the single player, but the multiplayer manages to bring people together. 19. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (DS) Always been a huge fan of the Pokemon series. The formula is getting a little old, but it's been a while since a brand new entry. 18. Blue Dragon (Xbox360) Dislike the art style, but it got great reviews in Japan so it better be good! 17. Army of Two (Xbox360, PS3) Great looking innovative co-op gameplay. 16. Metroid Prime 3 (Wii) The Wii just doesn't seem to work well with first person aiming. And with the power of the Wii lacking one of my favorite game series of all time is quickly looking generic. Still the Metroid series always manages to make a good game.

4:34 pm - An in depth look at PSP/DS Scores
|
It always annoys me when I see crap about the PSP on podcasts or message boards. Constant talk about how the PSP has no good games. Talk of ports which while true is not entirely correct. While there are some ports many of the great games are just continueing games in the series (very similar to the best DS games). In my eyes the PSP and DS are quite different, but both relevent. The DS has the touch screen and Nintendo Franchises. With this comes problems. The touch screen isn't always used, and when it is it doesn't always work the best (Same thing with the Wii). The PSP has far better graphics than the DS, so it can play games that you have seen on the PS2 etc. Problem of course is that you are playing with the same types of gameplay you have played before. Yet this doesn't stop people from having fun with the Wii and the PS360, and it shouldn't stop people from having fun with both the DS and PSP. A big problem could be how the UMD format and Sony's issues with the PSP as a media device has made it a joke among some people. The same people who insist "games" are what matters. Go figure. So i've decided to make a little list using gamerankings to see just what scores critics are giving the games they seem to believe don't exist.
I stopped the list at games that scored an average of 75% or more from gamerankings. Of course some games that people consider worthy of purchasing (Like Contact (DS), Mario Hoops (DS), Monster Hunter (PSP), Power Stone Collection (PSP)) just didn't make the list. A C or higher is where I draw the limits of "critical appeal." I had to stop somewhere!
DS - 44 Games - 81.42 AVG Mario Kart DS - 92.3 Advanced Wars: DS - 90.5 Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - 90.3 New Super Mario Bros. - 88.8 Meteos - 88.7 Kirby: Canvas Curse - 87.6 Elite Beat Agents - 86.9 Animal Crossing: Wild World - 86.6

6:22 pm - Moh-Tah-Stome Review
|
Motorstorm is a hard game to review. On one hand it's full of great graphics, and fun gameplay. On the other it lacks features that many of us have come to expect in our racing games. Despite this I still can find a lot to have fun with.
Motorstorm is first and formost an action game. It has some simulation elements, but for the most part its a what-if game. What if you could take a huge semi truck race it against a small motorbike in huge mud filled environments? Motorstorm answers this in what is probably the best aspect of the game. The combination of bikes, ATVs, buggy's, trucks, rally cars, and semi's really adds a layer of strategy and depth that no other racing game has. The tracks are littered with multiple paths. Different vehicles run better on different paths. It's up to you to choose the best vehicle for each path. The controls are tight and the wrecks are great.

4:49 pm - Some Short New Film Reviews...
|
Saw Reno 911: Miami, Black Snake Moan, Zodiac, and 300 over the past couple weeks. All 4 were good and here are my very short takes.
Reno 911: Miami Perfect example of why television still works. "Stories" like this are perfect for television, but don't work very well on film in this "short" form. Still it had some great moments. Just not enough for me to warrant it a must see. C+
Black Snake Moan An interesting movie that was entertaining, funny, and charming throughout. The end to me was a little wierd and pretentious, but overall it worked. This movie feels independent in ****all throughout. So don't go in expecting anything mainstream. B
Zodiac A very long and fascinating story (especially for someone like me who never heard it before). I just found it amazing how a 3 hour that wasn't an epic action piece could hold me attention so well. Great acting all around and of course great direction by David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club, Panic Room) A-
300 Usually I enjoy subtext and talking scenes in movies. They give it a realistic tone. Pure blood and guts tends to be boring. But not here. The best parts of 300 are by far the action scenes. This really is a love it or hate it film for many people. Either you like the graphic novel violence or you find it gross. I loved it. B+
